Nachhaltigkeit auf Kosten anderer?
Misereor / KEB Deutschland / Stiftung ZASS (September 2021)

I was invited to contribute an article to ÜberLebensMittel Wasser, a brochure published by Misereor, KEB Deutschland and Stiftung ZASS. In “Sustainability at the expense of others? Lithium-boom and water conflict in Southamerica” I refer to the connection between the global sustainability discourse and the lithium-boom. The latter provokes severe conflicts around water in the Southamerican Andes.

Es geht nicht um mehr Elektro-, sondern um weniger Autos
Die Presse (April 2021)

New technologies, new raw materials, new conflicts. I wrote a short article about e-mobility and lithium mining in South America and Spain / Portugal for Die Presse. In the article I advocate for more transparent supply chains and respect for human rights. Based on the “new” conflicts around lithium mining projects in Portugal and Spain, I show that we are facing a more structural, than technological problem. We therefore need a "real" mobility transition, based on more bicycle traffic and more investment in public transport.

Ausbeutung für Akkus?
SPICK Magazine (April 2021)

The Swiss children's magazine SPICK published my photo series and a short interview about lithium mining in South America in their April issue. I am super happy being able to make this topic accessible to a younger audience.

Das weiße Gold: Energiewende auf Kosten der Umwelt?
kwerfeldein (December 2020)

I was interviewed for the online photography magazine kwerfeldein. Katrin Strohmaier asked me asked me about the exciting combination of science and photography. Using lithium mining in South America as an example, we talked about message and esthetics, my approach to photographic and/or scientific projects and about my role as photographer and social scientist. Thank you, Katrin, for the exciting questions. The full interview is available here (in German).

Kampf um Lithium in den Hochanden
Der Standard (November 2020)

I published a short article and a photo spread in the Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard (Research supplement and online). In the accompanying article, I tried to illustrate the complexity of the local conflicts: In Europe, the lithium debate is very often reduced to its ecological dimension. While critics accuse lithium mining of a gigantic water consumption, others point out that it is mainly undrinkable salt water (brine). In this discussion the effects on the local population are largely ignored.

Verflucht und unverzichtbar
Nürnberger Nachrichten (October 2020)

Matthias Niese interviewed me about my research on lithium mining in South America for a “topic of the week” feature in Nürnberger Nachrichten. We talked about the social-ecological impacts of lithium extraction, e-mobility as a pseudo-solution and the need for a more holistic and profound societal transformation.

Dreams in Lithium
MAX Magazine (February 2020)

For the revival issue of Max Magazine I was, alongside a six-page photo series about lithium mining in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, interviewed about my work. Although you can read the full feature of “Dreams in Lithium” here, the magazine is first and foremost a beautiful coffee table booklet. I never thought I would ever see my photography next to a famous photographer like Peter Lindbergh.

Faszination Puna - Storytelling in Argentiniens Norden
GATE7 Podcast (January 2020)

I was interviewed by Kai Behrmann for Gate 7, a German travel and photography podcast. We talked about northwest-Argentina and the Argentine Puna, reportage photography, visual storytelling and thinking in photo series. All in all, the interview is more than two hours, so that Kai published it as two podcast episodes. I’m very happy to be part of the show, so I hope you enjoy listening to it and of course I'm very happy about your feedback.

Proteste gegen Rohstoffförderung: “No al Litio”
SPIEGEL Online (June 2019)

Christoph Seidler interviewed me about my research on lithium mining in northwest-Argentina for SPIEGEL Online. The interview was published alongside my photo series of the social movement in Salinas Grandes. In the area, local communities are afraid of environmental pollution and fight for more participation and indigenous rights.
